Susana Malón Giménez holds a degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Zaragoza, a Master’s in Environmental Engineering from the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Zaragoza, and a Master’s in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the International University of Valencia.

She is recognised as a “Physicist of Excellence” and is part of the Network for Innovation and Professional Excellence in Physical Sciences and Technologies.

Susana serves on the Governing Board of the Spanish Lighting Committee and is also a Starlight auditor.

For over 22 years, she has been involved in projects on light pollution and environmental impact studies related to outdoor lighting across various infrastructure types.

She has conducted characterisations of night sky quality and Starlight certification processes in more than 60 territories, designing territorial action and strategic plans. Susana has also contributed to drafting technical documents on outdoor lighting and light pollution, as well as developing regulations and ordinances for outdoor lighting and night sky protection.

In the field of science communication, she designs and delivers activities on astronomy and light pollution using COSMIUM®, a 360º full-dome immersive planetarium. She has developed tailored educational and awareness-raising programmes for diverse age groups.

In terms of outdoor lighting, Susana has performed hundreds of energy and lighting audits for municipal, industrial, and large-scale infrastructure nighttime illumination installations. Her work includes producing lighting maps, drafting master plans and projects, writing specifications, providing technical support during tender processes, and overseeing construction projects.

In early 2012, Susana founded Lumínica Ambiental, a technical office specialising in outdoor lighting and light pollution. The organisation earned the first prize in the Emprendeverde Awards from the Biodiversity Foundation of Spain’s Ministry for the Environment. She also received the Young Company Award in 2013 from the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Álava and the Association of Professional and Businesswomen of Álava.

Her accolades include the 2021 Starlight Award for “Smart and Sustainable Lighting.” She was directly involved in projects that won the 2023 and 2024 Starlight Awards for “Smart and Sustainable Lighting” in Soria Province and Zaragoza City Council, respectively.
